Joyce و Kraut، JCMC، 2006.
Dover و Kelman، PLOS ONE، 2018.
Reich و Ruipérez-Valiente، Science، 2019.
Every community loses members. The question is why, and what can be done. This is what we found in published research, with sources.
One reply to a first post changes everything. A study of 2,777 newcomers: those who got a reply to their first post posted again 56% of the time; those who did not, 44%. Strikingly, the quality of the reply made no difference. What mattered was that one arrived. Joyce & Kraut, JCMC, 2006.
Life begins at twenty members. Across hundreds of thousands of communities on seven platforms: below twenty, activity is sporadic, about two posts per member. At around twenty a sharp shift to real activity happens, the effect keeps growing to about fifty, then levels off. Dover & Kelman, PLOS ONE, 2018.
Education subscriptions lose more members than any other sector. 4.99% a month, against a 3.60% average across all industries. Recurly, 2026.
A third of the people who leave never decided to. Of that 4.99% in education, 1.69% is a card that failed to charge, not a member who chose to go. Same source.
More than half of people who sign up for open courses never start. Of 12.67 million registrations, 52% never began and only 3.13% finished. Among those who paid for a certificate, 46% finished. Reich & Ruipérez-Valiente, Science, 2019.
How you count changes the picture. The same courses show 30% completion by everyone who registered, and 43% by those who actually started. Celik & Cagiltay, Open Praxis, 2024.
What we could not source: "members active in week one retain at 90%" and "gamification lifts retention 24%." We found them only on blogs that cite no study. We left them out.
Three things to do this week:
A rule with no exceptions: no member's first post goes unanswered the same day. This is the strongest evidence in the whole list.
Think in rooms of twenty to fifty, not one big channel. If your community is large, retention comes from the small groups inside it.
Check whose card failed before you check your content. Those people did not want to leave.
How many members are in your room right now? And do you answer every first post? Write it honestly. That is what we build on.
